Nov 8, 2018 – Debate Team Tournament News

The University of San Francisco debate team just returned from a tournament at CSU Northridge (in Los Angeles) and we are excited to share news of our success! We had two teams compete in novice parliamentary debate in a field of 20 competitors.

One team, Andy Chan and Ethan Tan, won 5 out of 6 preliminary debates. They went on to win the quarterfinal round and the semifinal round. Andy and Ethan lost the final round to El Camino College, and therefore finished in SECOND place at the tournament! In addition to their success as a team, Ethan was individually rewarded with an award for 2nd Speaker!

Our other team, Monique Ray and Jehiele Luevanos, won 3 out of 6 preliminary debates. They went on to compete in the quarterfinal round and finished in 5th place overall. This tremendous achievement is underscored by the fact that it was Monique and Jehiele’s very first debate tournament. Monique also won 7th speaker overall.

I am incredibly proud of our students and I am honored to work with them. Most of all, it seems like everyone had fun and learned how to be better advocates during the trip. Our next tournament is scheduled for the beginning of December, when students will be asked to participate in a local “intramural” tournament with SFSU and CCSF.

Thanks for your support.

Best,
Orion Steele
