Rhetoric and Languages Pilot ‘Directed Self Placement’ Canvas Course

What happens when an institution decides to omit SAT scores from the admission process?

Jonathan Hunt & Cathy Gabor

They create a Canvas course to help students self-assess their writing skills. This summer, Jill Ballard, instructional designer for the College of Arts and Sciences, and Greg Crum, senior instructional technologist, worked with members of the Department of Rhetoric and Languages to pilot a Canvas course with Muscat Scholars comprised of a questionnaire, sample essays, and a short reflection. Based on students’ responses, the course outputted the rhetoric course that was likely the best fit for each student. This course is a great example of how Canvas can enable contemporary and unconventional solutions to traditional challenges, and in this case, foster student self-awareness and increase agency in understanding their writing skills.
